Every summer, Excelia’s international students leave the classroom behind for a fully immersive experience of French culture.
In La Rochelle, the Excelia International Institute summer schools combine intensive French classes with opportunities to explore the local heritage. The result is an international experience that is both educational and immersive, with learning taking place just as much outside the classroom as in it.

Learn French by experiencing the culture
Run during the summer at the La Rochelle Campus, the summer schools are open to international students with a minimum A2 level of French. Two formats are available: a two-week session comprising 40 hours of classes, or a four-week session comprising 80 hours. Each programme combines French as a Foreign Language classes with a varied programme of cultural activities, following the “Crossover Learning” method, which blends formal and informal learning to support faster progress. Working in international groups organised by language level, participants use French throughout the programme while building a global network.
Cognac, cocktails and a look behind the scenes at a festival
Beyond the classroom, the summer schools place a strong emphasis on hands-on experiences. This summer, participants visited Maison Hennessy in Cognac to discover one of the region’s most iconic areas of expertise. They then learnt how to make cocktails with a French twist at Mary Lili, before going behind the scenes of the Francofolies, La Rochelle’s major music festival, to explore how the event is organised. The experience continued at La Frenchie, combining a welcoming atmosphere with an insight into the local way of life. Further excursions took students to Île de Ré, Rochefort, the Marais Poitevin and Saint-Émilion, showcasing the many facets of the region’s heritage.
Experience the French way of life with a host family
For many students, the immersion continued as part of everyday life. Many stayed with French host families, carefully selected by the Institute. This option allows students to practise the language naturally, share meals and local customs, and experience French culture far beyond the classroom.
A recognised programme and a pathway to higher education
At the end of the programme, students receive an Excelia International Institute certificate. Backed by a school that is triple-accredited by EQUIS, AACSB and AMBA and holds the Qualité FLE label, the summer schools provide a rigorous international learning environment. They also offer a pathway to higher education in France for students wishing to continue their studies there. For many, a summer of learning becomes a genuine springboard to an international future.
