Financial support for accommodation for international students
Several schemes are available in France to help reduce the cost of your accommodation. Below are the main forms of support for which you may be eligible.
|
Important: changes to APL housing benefit from 1 July 2026 From 1 July 2026, students from outside the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland will need to receive a CROUS means-tested grant to qualify for CAF housing benefits, including APL, ALS and ALF. Students from the EU, EEA or Switzerland, as well as eligible grant recipients, are not affected. Visit Service-Public.fr for full details and eligibility requirements. |

CAF offers three types of housing benefit that cannot be combined: APL, ALS and ALF. CAF will automatically determine which benefit applies to your circumstances. The amount awarded depends on your location, rent and personal situation. Only your own income is taken into account, not your parents’ income. Apply as soon as you have signed your tenancy agreement, as payments cannot be backdated. Estimate my entitlement → |

Visale is available to international students under the age of 30 who hold a valid residence permit. Students from outside the EU must hold either a valid VLS-TS long-stay visa marked “étudiant” or a valid student residence permit. You must apply before signing your tenancy agreement. Action Logement can advance your security deposit in the form of an interest-free loan with no application fees. The scheme is available to students receiving a French government grant, employed students and all young people under the age of 30. Check my eligibility → |
